Top Features of A Good Budget
1. Personalize it
Why are you making a budget? It's important to have a purpose to your budget and goals you want to reach. Perhaps you want a certain amount in your savings account, or you are saving up for a car. Maybe you want to get out of debt. Budgeting has different meanings for everyone.
2. Be realistic
A budget is not a magic formula that will result in a sudden increase in your available money. Also bear in mind that there just may not be enough money for some of the things you want.
3. Keep it simple
There's no need to make a budget into a complicated headache. Effective budgets are clear, simple, minimal, and thorough all at once.
4. Update
Your budget will go through changes, and you need to have it in a format that allows for making changes. Especially in the first few months, you probably will need to tweak it by adding or changing things.
5. Remember savings
Don't forget to budget in a certain amount for savings. And when your budget is in full swing and you find yourself with a surplus, consider putting it toward savings or making an extra payment on a debt before spending it all on something you want.
6. Keep track of cash
Cash is hard to pin down - how many times have we all looked into our wallets and been stunned that we only have a couple of dollars when we "just had" so much cash in there? Be sure you write down how much cash you have with you, and how much you have when you return. You may find you can cut your budget in the area of cash expenditures once you get a handle on them.
7. Track expenses besides monthly ones - yearly, daily, etc.
Most budgets are done on a monthly timeline, but daily expenditures can really add up. Annual expenses such as membership fees need to be considered, too, because they can sneak up on you.
8. Be patient
If you're new at this, there will be glitches. Give it a few months for the budget to really work for you and be what you want it to be.
